This page explains how Ctrl + Alt News decides what to publish, how we check it, how we use AI, how we handle images and money, and how we correct mistakes. It applies to the UK edition, available at https://ctrlaltnews.co.uk. Who we are is on our About page. How we handle personal data is in our Privacy Policy, and the rules for using the site are in our Terms of Use.
1. Our aim and our independence
Ctrl + Alt News is an independent news and reviews site about artificial intelligence, science, robotics and gadgets. We aim to tell readers what happened, what we know, what we do not know yet, and why it matters.
- We do not sell coverage. We do not accept payment for articles, for ratings or for the position of a story.
- Advertising and editorial are separate. Advertisements are clearly labelled and never decide what we write.
- Commercial relationships will never decide our coverage. If we have a relationship that could affect how a story is read, we say so in the article.
2. How we choose stories
We look for developments in our four areas that matter to readers: new products and prices, research results, company announcements, safety and policy questions, and claims that deserve a closer look. We prefer stories where we can show our sources. We do not publish rumours as facts. Where a story rests on a leak or a rumour, we say so in the article.
3. How we check our facts
- We go to the source. We aim to read the original material, such as a company announcement, a research paper, a court filing or an official page, not just coverage of it.
- We confirm what matters. Where we can, we confirm important facts with independent reporting. Several websites repeating the same press release count as one source.
- We say what we could not check. If a source was unavailable, behind a paywall or unclear, or if a figure comes only from a company, we say so. A claim is attributed to whoever made it, and we separate what is confirmed from what is claimed, expected or rumoured.
- We write in our own words. We do not copy other sites. Quotes are short and name the source, and we link to our sources so you can read them yourself.
- Dates and prices. We note the date a price or availability was last checked, and whether a product is sold in the UK.
4. How we use AI
We use AI tools, including assistants such as Claude from Anthropic, to help with research, drafting and the generation of illustrations. A human editor reviews and approves every article before it is published. AI tools do not decide what is true: facts are checked against sources as described above. When we write about a company whose tools we use, including Anthropic, we say so in the article.
5. Bylines
Articles carry the name of the section they belong to: Ctrl+Alt AI, Ctrl+Alt Science, Ctrl+Alt Robotics and Ctrl+Alt Gadgets. These are section bylines, not individual people. We do not invent biographies or photos for them.
6. Images, video and embedded content
- AI-generated images are used to illustrate an idea and are labelled as AI-generated illustrations. We never present an AI image as a photograph of a real event, a real person or a real product.
- Photographs and press images are used only when we have the right to use them, for example images published for the press by the companies or organisations concerned, or images released under a licence that allows it. We credit the source and show them unaltered. Where a licence is unclear, we ask for permission or do not use the image.
- Videos and posts from other sites (for example YouTube or X) are embedded, not copied. They load only after you click, as explained in our Privacy Policy.
7. Reviews and gadget coverage
- “Tested” reviews are published only when we have actually used the product, and we say how we tested it.
- First looks and buying guides are based on manufacturers’ specifications and on tests published by others, which we cite. They are labelled as such and do not claim hands-on testing.
- If we are lent or given a product to review, we say so.
8. Affiliate links and sponsored content
We do not currently use affiliate links or publish sponsored content. If we do:
- Affiliate links will be disclosed clearly, near the top of the article and before the first affiliate link, in plain words, for example “If you buy through our links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.” Affiliate links will also be marked as sponsored in the page’s code.
- Commissions will never decide what we write or how we rate a product. The same coverage standards apply whether or not a link earns money.
- Sponsored content, if we ever publish it, will be labelled “Sponsored” and kept apart from our editorial articles.
- We will update this page and our Privacy Policy before any of these start.
9. Corrections and updates
If we get something wrong, we want to fix it. We correct clear errors promptly. When a change matters, such as a changed fact, number or conclusion, we say what we changed and when. We also update articles when important new information appears, for example an official price or a company’s response.
10. Right of reply
If an article names a person or an organisation and you think it is wrong or unfair, write to us. We will read your message, check it against our sources and correct the article if it is wrong. If you want to add a comment from your side, we will consider including it.
