Transparency note: this text was written with the help of ChatGPT, at the site’s request, and then checked and corrected by us against the official pages of OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. The site also uses Claude, made by Anthropic. Because the question in the headline is a matter of opinion, we show the data and where ChatGPT is not the best.

Imagine having an assistant that can explain a complicated subject as if you were 10, analyse a spreadsheet from work, help plan your holiday, create an image for a project and research a topic using sources from the internet.

Now imagine doing all of that without learning to program or mastering dozens of different tools.

That is the pitch of ChatGPT.

Since it became known worldwide, OpenAI’s AI assistant has stopped being just a tool that can chat and write texts. It now brings together different models, multimodal features, search tools, file analysis and functions that let it carry out more complex tasks.

On 7 October 2026, OpenAI said on the GPT-6 launch page that more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week. That is a company figure we could not confirm independently, and popularity is not, in itself, proof of technological superiority.

The question that really matters is a different one:

With so many AI options available, what makes ChatGPT such an interesting choice?

The answer lies less in one extraordinary capability and more in the combination of features the platform puts at the user’s disposal.

1. What is ChatGPT and how does it work?

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence assistant developed by OpenAI.

It uses advanced AI models, including the GPT family, to interpret questions, understand instructions and produce answers in natural language.

That means you can talk to the system much as you would explain a task to another person. You don’t need to know any special commands.

You can write:

“Explain what quantum computing is using everyday examples.”

Or:

“I have a small shop and want to organise my sales. Where do I start?”

ChatGPT interprets the request and tries to offer an answer that fits the context.

### Are ChatGPT and GPT the same thing?

Not exactly.

GPT is the family of AI models. ChatGPT is the app that uses models and tools to help the user.

Think of the difference between a car’s engine and the complete vehicle. The engine provides the fundamental ability to move, but to drive you also need a steering wheel, brakes, a gearbox and a dashboard.

In the same way, the GPT models provide language, reasoning and information-processing abilities. ChatGPT adds the interface, the tools, the search features, the connections to services and other functions.

This distinction helps explain why comparing the performance of two models is not enough to decide which AI app to use. If these terms are new to you, see our explainer on LLMs, AI agents and agentic AI.

2. The first big advantage: anyone can use it

One of ChatGPT’s most important qualities is how easy it is to use.

You don’t need to know how to program, understand artificial intelligence or master technical terms. You just explain what you want.

And if the first answer isn’t quite what you were after, you can carry on the conversation:

“Explain it more simply.”

“Now show an example.”

“Make a comparison.”

“Turn that into a table.”

“I didn’t understand the second part. Can you explain it again?”

This step-by-step interaction is one of the features that make conversational assistants useful.

### An example for someone who has never used AI

Imagine someone who needs to understand how solar power works.

They start by asking: “What are solar panels?” Then: “Do they work when it’s cloudy?” Next: “Can you compare a household’s energy use with and without panels?”

The system follows the conversation and can use the earlier information to give more contextual explanations. It is like talking to a private tutor who adapts the explanation to what you want to learn.

The difference is that ChatGPT does not replace an expert, and its answers need to be checked when the information matters.

Its great benefit is shortening the distance between a question and the knowledge needed to start answering it.

3. ChatGPT is not just for writing text

For some time, many people associated generative AI only with writing essays, messages and summaries. ChatGPT is still useful for those tasks, but its set of features is much broader.

### What can you do with ChatGPT?

ActivityPractical example
LearnUnderstand maths, science, history or programming
WriteCreate and edit articles, messages, reports and scripts
ResearchFind recent information and consult sources
Analyse dataExamine spreadsheets, compare results and produce charts
Work with filesSummarise PDFs and pull information from documents
Create imagesDevelop illustrations, concepts and visual material
ProgramExplain code, find errors and build applications
PlanOrganise trips, schedules and projects
Talk by voiceAsk questions and follow the answers aloud
Carry out tasksUse compatible tools and services, depending on permissions

It is worth noting that some features depend on the plan, the device, the region and the settings available. OpenAI’s pricing page, for example, lists image generation as limited on the free plan and unlimited on Pro.

### Why does bringing all this together matter?

Imagine a professional preparing a presentation of their company’s results. In a traditional workflow they may need one app to research information, another to organise the spreadsheet, another to build charts and a fourth to prepare the presentation.

With the appropriate ChatGPT tools, part of that work can be done in a single experience, keeping the context of the task.

That doesn’t mean specialist apps have become unnecessary. It means the user can cut the number of manual steps needed to reach a useful first result.

The advantage is the integration between different activities, not a promise to replace every professional tool.

4. GPT-6 and the Intelligent Interface: when the answer is no longer just text

On 7 October 2026, OpenAI announced an important update to ChatGPT: the arrival of GPT-6 in the conversation, together with the so-called Intelligent Interface.

Before, the chatbot experience was mostly text. With the Intelligent Interface, ChatGPT can combine different formats in a single answer. According to OpenAI, answers can include illustrations, buttons, forms, charts and interactive experiences that you use right in the conversation. The format depends on the question: if plain text is the most useful, ChatGPT answers that way.

This includes:

  • Diagrams and visual representations.
  • Data charts.
  • Side-by-side comparisons.
  • Interactive controls.
  • Calculators and forms.
  • Small tools used directly in the conversation.

### Imagine learning maths without relying only on a written explanation

You want to understand how compound interest works. A traditional answer might give a formula and explain the calculation.

With an interactive experience, ChatGPT can show a calculator in which you change the starting amount, the interest rate and the investment period. As you change the numbers, you see how the result changes. OpenAI itself cites, as examples, a calculator to simulate the growth of savings and a tool to split the dinner bill.

### Another example: understanding how a bicycle works

Instead of giving only a description of the parts, a visual answer can use a diagram to help identify the components and understand what they do. OpenAI’s page shows precisely an example with a seven-speed bicycle.

### Who gets it and when

According to OpenAI, GPT-6 with the Intelligent Interface began arriving on 7 October, in the Chat tab, for the Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, and the next day for the Free and Go plans. On the paid plans, ChatGPT uses GPT-6 Sol; on the free and Go plans, GPT-6 Luna. The update applies to the Chat experience, and the Work and Codex models did not change with this launch.

The difference is not only in producing better answers, but also in presenting the information in a way better suited to the problem.

5. Searching the internet: an essential difference between knowing and checking

There is an important limitation in AI models: they don’t always have up-to-date information about recent events. A model may have learned about a subject during training, but that doesn’t mean it automatically knows about a news story published today.

That is why search tools matter so much.

### Web search: when you need current information

With web search, ChatGPT can consult online sources to answer questions about events, services and other topics that depend on recent information.

For example:

“What were the main AI announcements this week? Include the sources.”

The system can look up information, organise the results and present references to consult. However, the fact that an answer contains links does not guarantee its interpretation is correct. Sources also need to be assessed.

### Deep Research: when a question calls for investigation

Some subjects can’t be properly explained with a shallow search. Imagine you need to study the electric car market in the UK, looking at prices, charging infrastructure, manufacturers, limitations and trends.

In-depth research, Deep Research, is designed for tasks that require consulting and synthesising several sources. Instead of a short answer, the aim is a structured analysis, with references.

That can be especially useful for professionals preparing reports, students researching complex topics, entrepreneurs analysing markets, journalists organising sources and researchers carrying out surveys.

The pricing page lists in-depth research as limited on the Free and Go plans and expanded on Plus. The benefit is not to dispense with human checking, it is to make gathering and organising information more efficient.

6. An assistant that understands text, images, files and voice

Another reason to consider ChatGPT a versatile platform is its ability to work with different kinds of information. This is called multimodality: the interaction doesn’t have to be limited to typed text.

A phone on a stand photographing a circuit board on a desk, with the phone screen showing abstract cyan light
AI-generated illustration.

### Images: show instead of explaining

Imagine you are building a computer and come across a component you don’t recognise. Instead of trying to describe it, you can send a picture and ask: “What component is this and what is it for?”

ChatGPT can analyse the visual content and try to explain its function. The same feature can help interpret charts, understand diagrams or identify elements in a photograph. But visual analysis is not infallible, and critical information should be confirmed.

### Documents: turn files into useful information

You receive a long PDF, dozens of pages, and need to find only the main conclusions. Instead of reading it all, you can upload the document and ask: “Summarise the most important points, indicate the relevant pages and highlight information that needs attention.”

You can also compare documents or ask for data to be extracted, depending on the format and the tools available. The context window is a limit to bear in mind: according to the pricing page, the reasoning mode has 256,000 tokens on Plus and 400,000 on Pro, and the quick-answer mode 54,000 and 128,000.

### Spreadsheets: talk to your numbers

Imagine a spreadsheet with a shop’s sales results. You can ask: “Identify the three months with the highest revenue and show a chart of how sales evolved.” ChatGPT can use analysis tools to process the data and organise the result. That brings data analysis within reach of people who don’t master programming or complex formulas.

### Voice: talk naturally

ChatGPT also offers voice interaction. You can ask questions aloud, continue an explanation and ask for clarification without typing every message. It is an interesting option for practising languages, discussing ideas or learning while doing something else. Voice capabilities vary by plan.

7. Memory and projects: an assistant that can follow your work

Imagine you are developing a project over several months. In every new conversation you have to explain again the goal, the decisions already made and the rules to follow. That process is tiring.

ChatGPT has memory features that can help keep relevant information between conversations, according to the account settings. For example, it can take into account language preferences or the context of projects. That doesn’t mean it remembers everything perfectly: memory can be incomplete, can change over time and depends on the settings and the plan.

### Projects: organisation instead of isolated conversations

Projects let you gather conversations, files and instructions related to the same goal. Imagine a small business owner preparing the launch of an online shop. They can organise inside a project:

  • Market research.
  • Product descriptions.
  • Content strategy.
  • Commercial planning.
  • Reference documents.

That way the work no longer depends on separate conversations and uses a shared structure of context. For recurring tasks, this organisation can be as valuable as the quality of the model’s answer.

AI starts to be more useful when it doesn’t have to treat every request as a completely unconnected activity.

8. ChatGPT Work and Codex: from conversation to carrying out tasks

One of the most interesting developments in artificial intelligence is the ability to take part in carrying out tasks. Here we enter the field of AI agents.

A laptop whose screen shows abstract cyan blocks resembling a document, a spreadsheet and slides, beside a mug, on a work desk
AI-generated illustration.

A traditional chatbot can explain how to prepare a report. A system with tools and permissions can work on the files and help produce the report.

### ChatGPT Work: an assistant for more complete tasks

According to OpenAI’s help page, Work is an agent for longer jobs, with several steps and final deliverables. It is meant for researching a topic, analysing information and creating a document, a spreadsheet, a presentation, a report or a website. It can use connected apps and a browser and, in the desktop app, files and apps on your computer, with your permission.

Work can run once, repeat at set times or be triggered by an event, such as a new message in Gmail or Slack, on eligible plans. You follow the progress, answer questions, change direction and approve the important actions. On mobile and the web, Work runs in the cloud.

Imagine you need to prepare a sales presentation based on information from different documents. Instead of just asking for slide suggestions, you can define the expected result, provide reference files and ask for an editable presentation. The system can carry out stages of the work and present the result for review.

Artificial intelligence stops being only a source of recommendations and starts to take part in producing the work.

Even so, external actions depend on permissions, compatibility and, in relevant situations, the user’s approval.

### Codex: artificial intelligence applied to programming

For people who work in software development, OpenAI offers Codex, dedicated to writing and debugging code, running tests and commands, reviewing changes and working with a repository. Codex Cloud runs programming tasks on computers managed by OpenAI, and they can carry on even while your own computer is idle.

Imagine a developer who needs to investigate why an application shows a particular error. Instead of just asking what the cause might be, they can use Codex to examine files, identify problems, propose changes and run tests.

This kind of feature doesn’t turn just anyone into a programming expert, but it can reduce some of the repetitive work and make development more productive.

9. ChatGPT for studying: learning instead of simply copying answers

ChatGPT can be used in a particularly interesting way in education. But there is a difference between asking the AI to solve a question and using it to understand the solution.

Imagine a student struggling with fractions. They could ask: “Solve this exercise.” But a more productive approach would be: “Explain the concept of fractions with simple examples. Then ask me one question at a time to check I’ve understood.”

OpenAI’s pricing page lists a study mode among ChatGPT’s features. We did not open the help page dedicated to it, so we don’t detail how it works. The feature does not replace teachers, teaching materials or educational support, but it can work as a complementary tool.

10. ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini: which should you choose?

ChatGPT is not alone. Its main competitors include Claude, from Anthropic, and Gemini, from Google. All three offer advanced models and features that go well beyond ordinary conversations. The difference lies in specific capabilities, the user experience, integrations and commercial terms. We made a full comparison in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini: which AI should you choose.

PlatformStrengthsWhen to consider it
ChatGPTConversation, search, images, files, learning, agents (Work) and programming (Codex)For people looking for a versatile platform for different kinds of task
ClaudeProgramming with agents and a context window of up to 1 million tokens, according to AnthropicFor large projects, development and long documents
GeminiImages and video, search, integration with Google services and storageFor people who work heavily in the Google ecosystem

This comparison does not mean one platform is superior in every category. Claude also offers agentic features, such as Claude Code, and Gemini also has in-depth research and platforms for agents.

### What do independent tests say?

On 28 October 2026, Gemini 4 Carbon scored 59 points on Artificial Analysis’s intelligence index v5, followed by Claude Opus 5.5 with 58 and GPT-6 Astra with 57. These results show that the leading makers compete at high levels of performance.

However, Gemini 4 Carbon had restricted public access on the date of the analysis. And the benchmark evaluates models in specific configurations, not the complete experience of the apps. In the assessment more focused on programming with agents, the same Artificial Analysis put Claude Code with Opus 5.5 ahead (62 points, against 59 for Gemini 4 Carbon).

None of these figures shows that a single assistant is the best for absolutely everyone.

### So why choose ChatGPT?

Because, for someone who needs a general-purpose tool, it is convenient to have features from different areas in one familiar platform. You can start with a simple question, move on to analysing a file, create an image, consult sources and, when available, use more advanced tools.

This continuity is a relevant argument in ChatGPT’s favour. But the preference for it should be understood as an assessment of its versatility, not as an undisputed victory over all its competitors.

11. Is ChatGPT free? Is it worth paying?

One of the platform’s advantages is that it lets new users try its features without taking out a subscription. ChatGPT offers free and paid options, and the features and limits vary by plan.

PlanPrice shown on the pageTypical use
Free£0To try it out and use basic features day to day
Go£7 a month (may include ads)For people who need higher limits than the free plan
Plus£20 a monthFor study, productivity and more advanced tasks
ProFrom £89 a monthFor people who need more capacity and heavy use
Business and EnterpriseOn requestFor teams and organisations with administrative needs

The page shows prices in pounds, but check the price for your region when you subscribe. The availability of specific models, tools and limits may vary.

### Which plan makes the most sense?

If you use AI occasionally to answer questions, translate texts or organise ideas, the free plan may be enough. If you work every day with documents, research, analysis and content production, a paid plan can offer practical advantages. The more advanced tiers make sense when your needs justify the extra cost.

12. What doesn’t ChatGPT do perfectly yet?

No serious analysis of artificial intelligence should ignore the limitations. ChatGPT can make mistakes. It can misread a question, produce out-of-date information, give faulty calculations or generate references that don’t support a given claim. It can also fail to interpret images or carry out complex tasks. Having advanced tools does not remove these risks.

### Privacy needs attention too

It is important to be careful when sharing personal data, confidential documents and commercial information. According to the pricing page, content may be used to train the models, with the option to opt out on all consumer plans. Business environments have their own policies. Check these settings before sending sensitive information.

### The most important rule

Use AI to extend your ability to work and learn, not to replace your own judgement entirely.

For medical, legal, financial or other important decisions, confirm the information with reliable sources and qualified professionals.

13. How to start using ChatGPT wisely

Many people try ChatGPT by asking generic questions and end up not discovering everything it can offer. The quality of the instructions has a big influence on how useful the answer is. Here are three examples.

### Example 1: to learn something new

“Explain what artificial intelligence is as if I had never studied technology. Use everyday examples and, at the end, ask me three questions to check I’ve understood.”

### Example 2: to organise a business

“I have a small online shop. I want to keep my sales better organised. Suggest a simple tracking structure, explain what information I should follow and show an example spreadsheet.”

### Example 3: to research before buying

“I want to buy a laptop for work and study. My budget is £800. Look for options available in the UK, compare specifications and explain the pros and cons of each. Give the sources and the date of the prices.”

Notice that the requests include context, goal and expected format. The clearer the task, the easier it is to judge whether the result meets the need. And you can carry on the conversation to adjust whatever wasn’t right.

14. Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT

### Is ChatGPT the best artificial intelligence of 2026?

It is one of the most complete options for general use, especially because of the variety of tools brought together in a single platform. However, there is no proof that it is superior at every task. Claude, Gemini and other systems may have advantages depending on the need, and in programming with agents Claude leads an independent index.

### What is the difference between ChatGPT and GPT-6?

GPT-6 identifies a family of artificial intelligence models. ChatGPT is the app that uses models and additional features to offer conversations, search, content creation and other functions.

### Can ChatGPT look up current information?

Yes, when it uses the web search tools. That lets it consult recent sources, but the information found and the conclusions presented should still be checked.

### Can ChatGPT create images?

Yes. The pricing page lists image generation, limited on the free plan and unlimited on Pro, subject to the limits and availability of each plan.

### Can I use ChatGPT for work?

Yes. It can help with writing, data analysis, documents, project organisation, research and programming. More advanced task-execution features, such as Work, depend on a paid plan and the tools available.

### Is it safe to share documents with ChatGPT?

The platform offers data and privacy controls, but the user needs to check their settings and the policies of the organisation they belong to. Confidential information calls for extra care.

Conclusion: the best AI is the one that actually helps you

ChatGPT has become much more than a question-and-answer tool. It now brings together features for learning, researching, creating, organising information and taking part in professional activities.

The arrival of GPT-6 and the Intelligent Interface has widened the possibilities for interaction, while tools such as Work and Codex show how artificial intelligence can evolve from conversation to carrying out tasks. That combination makes ChatGPT one of the most attractive choices for anyone who wants to explore AI without using a different platform for each need.

That doesn’t mean its competitors are inferior at everything. The ideal choice depends on your goals, your budget, the features you need and the results you get in practice.

In the end, the question shouldn’t be just which AI has the most powerful model. It should be:

Which AI can best turn your ideas into useful results?

For many kinds of task, ChatGPT deserves to be among the first options to try.

What we could not confirm

The date and figures for GPT-6 and the Intelligent Interface, including the 1.2 billion weekly users, come from OpenAI’s page, with no independent confirmation. The features and plans come from official pages with no publication date. The pages show prices in pounds and dollars. We did not open the help pages on memory, study mode and data controls. We did not test ChatGPT. Artificial Analysis’s results depend on each model’s configuration.
