3. Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files that websites may store on your device to remember information or support certain functions.

Apart from the advertising described in section 3.5, CTRL + ALT News does not use third-party analytics cookies.

3.1 Comment form cookies

If you choose the option to save your name, email address and website in your browser when submitting a comment, WordPress may store the following cookies:

CookiePurposeTypical duration
comment_author_{HASH}Remembers your display nameApproximately one year
comment_author_email_{HASH}Remembers your email addressApproximately one year
comment_author_url_{HASH}Remembers your website addressApproximately one year

These cookies are intended to make future commenting more convenient.

They are optional and are associated with your choice to enable the comment form’s save-details feature.

3.2 Essential technical cookies

Our website infrastructure or WordPress installation may use cookies that are strictly necessary for security, administration or essential website functionality.

Where cookies qualify for an exemption under PECR, prior consent may not be required. We will still provide appropriate information about their use.

3.3 Managing cookies

You can manage or delete cookies through your browser settings.

If we introduce analytics, tracking or additional third-party technologies, we will review our cookie disclosures and implement any consent or other controls required by applicable law before using them.

3.4 Affiliate links

Our site does not set any cookie of its own because of an affiliate link. When you click an affiliate link to Amazon UK, you leave our site and Amazon may set its own cookies or similar technologies so that it can tell the purchase came through our link. Amazon decides how those work and explains them in its own notices.

3.5 Advertising cookies (Google AdSense)

The UK edition shows advertising provided by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies, device identifiers and similar technologies to show ads, to personalise them, to measure how they perform and to prevent fraud.

In the UK, the EEA and Switzerland we ask for your choice before Google uses these technologies for ads personalisation. The choice is collected through a consent message provided by Google, a consent management platform certified by Google. You can accept, reject or manage your choices, and you can change or withdraw them later. You can also manage ad personalisation in your Google account settings, and you can delete cookies in your browser settings.

If you do not consent, you may still see ads, but they will not be personalised using your browsing data.

Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

4. Advertising and affiliate links

CTRL + ALT News may publish product reviews, buying guides and links to external retailers.

Affiliate links. Some articles in our Gadgets section contain affiliate links to Amazon UK through the Amazon Associates programme. If you click one and buy, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Amazon tells us about orders and commissions through the programme; we do not ask for your name or contact details and do not expect to receive them from those reports. We label affiliate links as described in our Editorial Policy.

Advertising. The UK edition shows ads served by Google AdSense. When an ad is served, Google may receive information such as your IP address, your device and browser details and the page you are viewing, and it may read or set cookies as described in section 3.5. Our legal basis for advertising cookies and similar technologies is your consent. We do not receive your personal data from Google; we see aggregate reports about ad performance.

When you follow a link to another website, that website may collect information independently under its own privacy policy.

We do not control the privacy practices of external websites.

5. External links, fonts and sharing features

Our articles may link to external websites, publications, manufacturers, research organisations and online retailers.

External websites operate under their own terms and privacy policies.

Fonts

According to the configuration described in this policy, website fonts are hosted locally rather than being requested directly from external font providers.

This means that loading these fonts does not, by itself, require your browser to connect to Google Fonts.

Social sharing

Our article-sharing features are intended to operate through ordinary links.

Simply viewing an article does not, through these sharing links alone, transmit information to the relevant social media platform.

If you click a sharing link, you may be redirected to an external service, such as X or WhatsApp, where that service’s privacy policy applies.

Embedded videos and posts

Some articles embed videos from YouTube (Google) or posts from X. They load only after you click “Load video” or “Load post”. Once loaded, that service may set cookies and process your data, such as your IP address, under its own privacy policy.

6. Who we share personal data with

We may share limited personal information with trusted service providers where necessary to operate the website or respond to communications.

These may include:

Website hosting provider: Hostinger, which provides website hosting and related technical infrastructure.

Email provider: Microsoft Outlook, which processes correspondence sent to our published email address.

Advertising partner: Google, through Google AdSense, as described in sections 3.5 and 4.

Technical service providers: Other providers supporting essential website functionality, security or maintenance, where applicable.

These providers may process information on our behalf or act as independent data controllers, depending on the service and circumstances.

Where required, we use appropriate contractual arrangements and safeguards to protect personal information.

We do not sell personal information.

We may also disclose information where legally required or where necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

7. International data transfers

Our website is intended to use UK-based hosting infrastructure.

However, certain service providers may process or access personal information from other countries.

Where a transfer of personal data outside the United Kingdom is subject to UK international transfer rules, we will ensure that an appropriate legal mechanism applies.

Depending on the circumstances, this may include:

  • UK adequacy regulations.
  • The UK International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA).
  • The UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
  • Another lawful transfer mechanism permitted under UK data protection legislation.

You may contact us for further information about relevant international transfers and applicable safeguards.

8. How long we keep personal information

We retain personal data only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, taking into account legal requirements, security needs and the nature of the information.

Server logs: Retained in accordance with the hosting provider’s applicable settings, retention arrangements and our operational or security requirements.

Email correspondence: Retained while an enquiry or matter is being handled and subsequently only where reasonably necessary for record-keeping, legal obligations or the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.

Comments: Published comments and associated moderation information may be retained while the relevant article or discussion remains available. We will review requests for deletion in accordance with applicable data protection law.

Comment cookies: Normally expire after approximately one year, unless removed earlier through your browser settings.

When personal information is no longer required, we take reasonable steps to delete it securely or anonymise it where appropriate.

We periodically review our retention practices.

9. How we protect your information

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against unauthorised access, accidental loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure.

These measures may include:

  • HTTPS encryption for website connections.
  • Access controls for website administration.
  • Software updates and security maintenance.
  • Appropriate authentication and account protection.
  • Hosting infrastructure security measures.

No online system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

If we become aware of a personal data breach, we will assess it and comply with any applicable legal notification requirements.

10. Your data protection rights

Under the UK GDPR and applicable UK data protection law, you may have the following rights:

  • Right of access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification: Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Right to erasure: Request deletion of your personal information in certain circumstances.
  • Right to restriction: Ask us to restrict how your information is processed in certain circumstances.
  • Right to data portability: Receive certain personal information in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format where the legal conditions apply.
  • Right to withdraw consent: Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent, without affecting processing carried out lawfully before withdrawal.

Right to object: You may object to processing based on our legitimate interests. We will assess your objection and stop the relevant processing unless we have compelling legitimate grounds to continue or another applicable legal justification.

These rights are not absolute and may be subject to legal conditions or exemptions.

To exercise your rights, contact:

ctrlaltnewsuk@outlook.com

We may request information reasonably necessary to verify your identity before responding.

We will normally respond without undue delay and within one calendar month, subject to any extension permitted by law.

We do not currently describe any solely automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects concerning visitors.

11. Data protection complaints

If you have concerns about how CTRL + ALT News handles your personal information, you can submit a data protection complaint by emailing:

ctrlaltnewsuk@outlook.com

Please include sufficient information to help us understand and investigate your concern.

We will:

  • Acknowledge receipt of your complaint within 30 days.
  • Take appropriate steps to investigate it without undue delay.
  • Keep you informed about its progress where appropriate.
  • Explain the outcome and any action taken, without undue delay.

You also have the right to complain to the UK supervisory authority:

Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)

Website: https://ico.org.uk

We welcome the opportunity to address concerns directly, but you are not required to contact us before approaching the ICO.

12. Children’s privacy

CTRL + ALT News publishes general technology news, reviews and educational articles. Our services are not specifically directed at children under the age of 13.

We do not knowingly seek to collect personal information from children under 13 through comments or direct communications.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe that a child has submitted personal information to us, please contact ctrlaltnewsuk@outlook.com.

We will review the situation and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable data protection requirements.

13. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in:

  • Website features and functionality.
  • Privacy practices and service providers.
  • Advertising or affiliate programmes.
  • Applicable laws and regulatory guidance.

When changes are made, we will update the date displayed at the beginning of this policy.
