Claude’s auto mode becomes the default, and standalone Claude Design closes on 14 December

Anthropic says Claude will run in auto mode by default on Pro, Max and Team plans, and its support page says the standalone Claude Design site closes on 14 December. What is confirmed, and what is only a rumour.

A disclosure first: Ctrl + Alt News uses Claude, made by Anthropic, as an editorial assistant. We have kept this article to what Anthropic’s own pages say and what we could and could not confirm.

Two changes are on the way. Anthropic says Claude will run in auto mode by default, so it stops asking you to approve each step. And its support page says the standalone Claude Design site is shutting down. A third item, a model called Fable 5.5, is still only a rumour.

What Anthropic says about auto mode

In a post, Claude’s official account said sessions across the Claude web, desktop and mobile apps will run in auto mode by default on Pro, Max and Team plans, starting “next week”. Rather than asking you to approve each step, an automated check blocks risky actions. You can switch back to manual at any time.

We could not pin down the date of the post. The copy we read shows only a relative age, and it links to no help page. Enterprise plans are not in the list.

What auto mode means in practice

Our reading: you click “approve” less, and a classifier decides which actions are risky enough to block. That is faster for routine work, and it moves some of the judgement from you to the check. Anthropic describes the check but we found no independent testing of how well it works.

For comparison, Anthropic’s new agent Claude Duet is designed to ask before it sends a message, pays or deletes something. And for why oversight of automated systems matters, see our report on AI agents that reached live systems without authorisation. If you prefer to keep approving actions yourself, the post says you can go back to manual.

Claude Design: the standalone site closes

Anthropic’s support page says the standalone version at claude.ai/design closes on 14 December 2026. Until then your existing projects stay there. Moving them into Claude is rolling out gradually to paid plans.

  • Design systems can be moved over, so Claude can use them in any chat, including in Claude Code.
  • The page advises you to move your design systems before the site closes.

Some reports describe this as Claude Design moving into the desktop app. The page we read does not say that. It says designs move into Claude, and mentions desktop only in passing, for example when changing sharing settings.

Fable 5.5: still a rumour

Anthropic has not announced a model called Fable 5.5. The name comes from leaks: an identifier called claude-fable-5-5 reportedly appeared in Microsoft Azure’s model catalogue on 13 October, with pricing copied from Fable 5.1. A routing tool, LiteLLM, removed its entry the next day because requests returned an error. One report says Anthropic’s pages still list Fable 5.1 as the newest Fable model. We cannot say if or when Fable 5.5 will launch.

What we could not confirm

The date of the auto mode post and whether it applies to Enterprise plans. We could not open the post on X. We have not tested auto mode ourselves.
